Joel Cummings, Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Cummings serves as Chief Operating Officer for CellectCell as well as Partner for Medtown Ventures. He has an impressive 30 year career with over 13 years of experience in biologics. Mr. Cummings draws from 25 years in increasingly responsible roles in product development, engineering, manufacturing and operations within the medical industry.
Mr. Cummings began his career as a product development engineer in the Neurosurgical Division of Cordis Corporation. After ten years of designing and commercializing new products for several different device companies, he was recruited to Genzyme where he began a distinguished 12-year career. He entered Genzyme as Development Engineering Manager of the Tissue Repair Division and became Vice President of Operations for Genzyme BioSurgery where he was responsible for commercializing and scaling-up the first FDA “approved” Biologic, Carticel.
In 2005, Mr. Cummings left Genzyme where he then purchased, started-up and operated two Handyman Matters franchises and a ShelfGenie distributorship until early 2009. In 2009, Mr. Cummings joined Boston Scientific Corporation as Director of Preclinical Operations where his primary responsibilities were directing the preclinical operations supporting Boston Scientific’s diverse business units. Most recently, Mr. Cummings was Vice President of Operations at Biotissue Inc. where he oversaw, customer service, facilities, materials management and manufacturing.
Over the years, Mr. Cummings has designed and commercialized numerous medical products, and has received several patents and awards for his efforts. He has worked at both large companies and emerging companies, and has demonstrated his commitment to developing improved processes and leading high performing organizations.
Mr. Cummings earned his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his MBA from Rivier University.
